Steps

Goal: Bring the device close, check power, put the hub in add mode, and exclude if needed.

  • Confirm the device will not connect. Bring it within 3–5 feet of the hub.
  • Good: Device is close. Proceed to Bring close or Exclude then include.
  • Bad: Device is far—bring it close first.

Bring close

Goal: Rule out Z-Wave mesh range during include.

  • Move the device within 3–5 feet of the hub. Replace batteries if needed.
  • Put the hub in add or include mode per the app. Trigger the device during the window.
  • Confirm the device connects. After pairing, you can move it—the mesh extends range.

Exclude then include

Goal: Exclude the device from the hub, then include it fresh.

  • Put the hub in exclude mode per the app. Trigger the device. When excluded, include it again.
  • Confirm the device connects. If it still fails, reset the device per the manual and retry.

When to get help

  • Call the manufacturer if the device still will not connect after bringing it close, replacing batteries, and excluding if needed.

Verification

  • The device appears in the app and shows connected.
  • The device responds to commands.
  • No offline or pairing errors.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Bring device close Within 3–5 feet of the hub during inclusion.
  2. Replace batteries Low batteries prevent inclusion.
  3. Add mode Put the hub in add or include mode per the app.
  4. Exclude then include Remove device from hub, then include fresh.
  5. Call support Manufacturer for faulty or incompatible device.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Device model and hub
  • Whether device was previously paired
  • Steps already tried

Is the device within 3–5 feet of the hub?

Z-Wave range during inclusion is limited.

Move the device within 3–5 feet of the hub. Good: device is close. Bad: device is far—bring it close.

You can change your answer later.

Bring device close

Move the device within 3–5 feet. Put the hub in add mode. Retry include.

Does the device have power?

Replace batteries or confirm plugged in.

Replace batteries or confirm power. Good: device powered. Bad: low power—replace batteries and retry.

You can change your answer later.

Fix power

Replace batteries. Confirm plugged in. Retry include.

Was the device previously paired?

Exclude first if it was paired to this or another hub.

If the device was paired before, exclude it first. Put the hub in exclude mode, trigger the device. Then include it fresh. Good: excluded and included. Bad: not previously paired—put hub in add mode, trigger device, retry.

You can change your answer later.

Exclude then include

Put hub in exclude mode. Trigger the device. Then put hub in add mode. Include the device. If still fails, call support.

Retry include

Put hub in add mode. Trigger the device during the window. If still fails, exclude and include, or call support.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a Z-Wave device not connect?
Common causes: device too far from the hub, low batteries, hub not in add mode, or device already paired elsewhere. Bring it close and exclude then include if needed.
How far can a Z-Wave device be from the hub?
During pairing (include), keep the device within 3–5 feet. After pairing, the Z-Wave mesh extends range—other devices relay. Move the device to its final spot after it is included.
What does "exclude" mean for Z-Wave?
Exclude removes the device from the hub so it can be added fresh. If a device was paired to another hub or is stuck, exclude it first, then include it again.
