  • Adjustable wrench
  • Level

At a glance

  • Check that the radiator valve is fully open.
  • Replace or clean a stuck air vent—the most common cause of a cold radiator.
  • Confirm the radiator is level so condensate drains back to the boiler.
  • Bleed the vent by opening it briefly to release trapped air.
  • Call a plumber if the boiler is not producing steam or multiple radiators are cold.

Steps

Goal: Fix the air vent, confirm the valve is open, and know when to call a plumber.

  • Confirm the radiator valve is fully open.
  • Good: Valve is open. Proceed to Replace air vent.
  • Bad: Valve will not open—call a plumber.

Replace air vent

Goal: Fix a stuck or clogged air vent so steam can enter the radiator.

  • Shut off the valve and let the radiator cool. Unscrew the old vent and install a new one. Open the valve and wait for steam.
  • Good: Radiator heats and the vent closes when steam reaches it.
  • Bad: Radiator still cold—check level and call a plumber if needed.

Check valve and level

Goal: Confirm the valve is open and the radiator slopes toward the inlet.

  • Check that the valve is fully open. Place a level on the radiator—it should slope toward the pipe so condensate drains.
  • Good: Valve open, radiator level or sloping correctly.
  • Bad: Radiator slopes away—shim the legs.

When to get help

Call a plumber if:

  • The boiler is not producing steam.
  • Multiple radiators are cold.
  • The vent and valve are fine but the radiator still will not heat.

The problem may be in the boiler or main pipes.

Verification

  • Radiator heats when the boiler runs.
  • Air vent closes when steam reaches it.
  • No banging or uneven heating.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a steam radiator not heat?
Common causes: a stuck or clogged air vent that traps air, a closed or broken valve, or a radiator that is not level. The air vent must open to let steam in and close when steam reaches it.
Can I fix a cold steam radiator myself?
Yes. Replace or clean the air vent, confirm the valve is open, and check that the radiator is level. Most cold radiators are fixed by replacing the vent.
When should I call a plumber for a steam radiator?
Call a plumber if the boiler is not producing steam, multiple radiators are cold, or the vent and valve are fine but the radiator still will not heat. The problem may be in the boiler or main pipes.
