How to fix a water dispenser leak

Steps

  • Shut off the water at the valve behind or under the refrigerator. Confirm no water flows.
  • Good: No water flows. Proceed to Locate the leak.
  • Bad: Valve will not shut off—call a plumber.

Locate the leak

Goal: Identify where the water is escaping.

Tighten supply

Goal: Stop leaks at the supply line connections.

  • Shut off the water. Use two wrenches to tighten the supply line nuts a quarter turn. Do not overtighten. Turn the water on and test the dispenser.
  • Good: No drips at the connections. Proceed to Verification.
  • Bad: Still leaks—replace the supply line or call a plumber.

Check filter

Goal: Fix leaks at the water filter housing.

  • Turn off the water. Remove the filter and inspect the O-ring. Replace the filter if old or damaged. Reinstall and hand-tighten. Turn the water on and test.
  • Good: No drips at the filter. Proceed to Verification.
  • Bad: Housing is cracked—call a plumber or appliance repair.

When to get help

Call a plumber if:

  • The supply valve will not shut off.
  • The leak is inside the refrigerator (dispenser valve).
  • You need to replace plumbing behind the fridge.

Verification

  • No drips at the supply line, filter, or dispenser when using the dispenser.
  • Water dispenses at normal flow.
