What you'll need
  • Sump pump (submersible or pedestal)
  • Sump pit liner (18–24 inch diameter)
  • Check valve
  • Discharge pipe (PVC or flexible)
  • Gravel, GFCI outlet

At a glance

  • Dig or place a sump pit at the lowest point where water collects—typically 18–24 inches deep.
  • Set the pump in the pit with a check valve on the discharge line to prevent backflow.
  • Run the discharge pipe to the outside—away from the foundation—or to a storm drain if allowed.
  • Connect the pump to a dedicated GFCI outlet; test by pouring water into the pit.
  • Call a plumber or electrician if you need to run new electrical or have complex drainage.

Steps

Goal: Install the sump pump from pit to discharge.

  • Choose the lowest point for the pit. Dig and place the liner with gravel.
  • Good: Pit is in place. Proceed to Set the pump.
  • Bad: No clear low point—consider a professional assessment.

Set the pump

Goal: Position the pump and connect the discharge.

  • Place the pump on a brick or pedestal. Connect the check valve and discharge pipe.
  • Good: Pump is in the pit; discharge is connected. Proceed to Run discharge outside.
  • Bad: Pump does not fit—check the pit size and pump dimensions.

Run discharge outside

Goal: Route water away from the foundation.

  • Run the pipe through the foundation. Discharge 10–20 feet from the house.
  • Good: Water exits away from the foundation. Proceed to Connect power and test.
  • Bad: Cannot drill through foundation—call a plumber or contractor.

Connect power and test

Goal: Power the pump and verify it works.

  • Plug into a GFCI outlet. Pour water into the pit. Pump should turn on and drain the pit.
  • Good: Pump cycles on and off correctly. Proceed to Verification.
  • Bad: Pump does not run—check power and float switch.

When to get help

Call a plumber or electrician if:

  • You need to run a new electrical circuit.
  • The discharge cannot be routed outside (e.g., flat lot, no storm drain).
  • Local code requires a licensed professional for sump pump installation.

Verification

  • Pump turns on when water is added to the pit.
  • Water discharges away from the foundation.
  • Pump turns off when the pit is empty.
  • Cover is in place.
