Steps

Goal: Log into the router admin page so you can change Wi‑Fi settings, update firmware, or troubleshoot.

  • Find the admin address and password on the router sticker or manual.
  • Good: You have both. Proceed to Connect a device.
  • Bad: Sticker is missing or unreadable. See When to get help.

Find the admin address and password

Goal: Get the admin address and default credentials.

  • Check the sticker on the bottom or back of the router. Look for “Admin URL,” “IP Address,” or “Router Login” and “Password” or “Default Password.”
  • If the sticker is missing, check the manual or the manufacturer website (search “[brand] [model] default password”).
  • Good: You have the address (e.g. 192.168.1.1) and username/password. Proceed to Connect a device.
  • Bad: Cannot find them. If your ISP set up the router, contact them. See When to get help.

Connect a device to the router

Goal: Check that your device is on the router network so it can reach the admin page.

  • Connect your computer or phone to the router via Wi‑Fi or an Ethernet cable. You must be on the router network.
  • Good: The device shows connected (Wi‑Fi icon or Ethernet link). Proceed to Open the admin address.
  • Bad: Cannot connect. Fix the Wi‑Fi or Ethernet connection first; see Fix Wi‑Fi that drops or is slow for troubleshooting.

Open the admin address in a browser

Goal: Reach the router login screen.

  • Open a web browser and type the address in the address bar (e.g. http://192.168.1.1). Use http:// not https://.
  • Press Enter. You should see the router login screen.
  • Good: The login page appears. Proceed to Enter credentials.
  • Bad: The page does not load. See Page does not load.

Enter the username and password

Goal: Sign in to the router admin.

  • Enter the username and password from the sticker or manual. Common defaults are admin/admin or admin/password.
  • Click Login or Sign in. Confirm the router dashboard or settings page loads.
  • Good: You are logged in. Proceed to Confirm access.
  • Bad: Password rejected. See Password rejected.

Confirm you can access settings

Goal: Verify you are in the router admin and can reach the settings you need.

  • Open Wireless/Wi‑Fi settings, Firmware, or a similar section. Confirm the page loads and you can see the options.
  • Good: You can open and use settings. You are done—change channel, update firmware, or troubleshoot as needed.
  • Bad: Menus are missing or you are not sure you are in the right place. Re-login or check the router model.

Page does not load

Goal: Fix connection to the router admin page.

  • Confirm your device is connected to the router (Wi‑Fi or Ethernet).
  • Try http:// not https://. Some routers use plain HTTP.
  • Try a different browser or clear the cache. Try 192.168.0.1 if you used 192.168.1.1 (or vice versa).
  • Some routers require the first login over Ethernet.
  • Good: The page loads. Proceed to Enter credentials.
  • Bad: Still does not load. See When to get help.

Password rejected

Goal: Get past a failed login.

  • If the default password does not work, your ISP or a previous owner may have changed it. Contact your ISP if they set up the router.
  • If you changed it before, try your usual passwords.
  • Factory reset is a last resort—it wipes all settings. Only if you are prepared to reconfigure.
  • Good: You remember the password or get it from your ISP. Proceed to Enter credentials.
  • Bad: Cannot recover access. See When to get help.

When to get help

Contact your ISP or the router manufacturer if:

  • You cannot find the admin address or password and the sticker is missing.
  • The page never loads after trying the steps above.
  • Your ISP manages the router and will not share access.
  • You need to factory reset but are not sure how to reconfigure.

You can still power-cycle the router and do basic troubleshooting without router access. See Fix Wi‑Fi that drops or is slow.

Verification

  • You see the router dashboard or settings page in the browser.
  • You can open Wireless/Wi‑Fi settings, Firmware, or similar sections.
  • You know the admin address and how to log in for future changes.

Do you have the admin address and password?

Frequently asked questions

What is the default router login address?
Most routers use 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. Check the sticker on the bottom or back of the router, or the manual. Some use 192.168.31.1, 10.0.0.1, or other addresses.
What if I forgot my router password?
If you never changed it, use the default from the sticker or manual (often admin/admin). If your ISP set up the router, contact them—they may have set a custom password. As a last resort, you can factory reset the router, but that wipes all settings.
Why does the router page not load?
Confirm your device is connected to the router (Wi‑Fi or Ethernet). Try http:// not https://. Some routers block access over Wi‑Fi until you log in once over Ethernet. Clear the browser cache or try a different browser.
