Steps

Goal: Identify the alarm type, address the cause, then silence or reset the alarm.

  • Identify the alarm: water, freeze, smoke, CO, or security. Check the label or location.
  • Address the cause before silencing. Water: stop moisture. Freeze: warm the area. Smoke/CO: evacuate first.
  • Good: Cause addressed. Proceed to Use the silence button.
  • Bad: Cause still present—fix it first. See fix-water-alarm-sounds or fix-freeze-alarm-sounds.

Water or freeze path

Goal: Address moisture or cold, then silence the water or freeze alarm.

  • Water alarm: find and stop the moisture source. Check the sump pit, basement floor, and pipes. See fix-water-alarm-sounds.
  • Freeze alarm: warm the area. Add heat tape, open cabinet doors, or increase heat. See fix-freeze-alarm-sounds.
  • Once the cause is resolved, use the silence button. Confirm the alarm stops.

Smoke or CO path

Goal: Evacuate if needed, then silence only when safe.

  • If you smell smoke or suspect CO, evacuate immediately. Call 911 from outside.
  • Only return to silence the alarm after responders say it is safe.
  • Press and hold the hush button for 3–5 seconds. Confirm the alarm stops.

Security path

Goal: Disarm the security system with the correct code.

  • Enter the correct code on the keypad. If the keypad will not accept the code, see fix-keypad-will-not-accept-code.
  • If a zone fault is shown, check that all doors and windows are closed. Resolve the fault per the manual.

Use the silence button

Goal: Silence the alarm using the hush or reset button.

  • Press and hold the silence, hush, or reset button for 3–5 seconds.
  • Replace batteries if the unit does not respond. Confirm the alarm stops.

When to get help

  • Evacuate for smoke or CO—do not stay to silence the alarm.
  • Call a pro if the alarm is hardwired and you are not comfortable with electrical work.
  • Call a pro if the alarm still will not silence after addressing the cause and replacing batteries.

Verification

  • The alarm has silenced and stays silent when the cause is resolved.
  • Batteries are fresh (if battery-powered).
  • No fault or tamper condition is indicated.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Identify alarm type Confirm which alarm is sounding—water, freeze, smoke, CO, or security.
  2. Address cause Fix the condition that triggered the alarm before silencing.
  3. Silence button Use the hush or silence button; replace batteries if needed.
  4. Power-cycle or replace Power-cycle the unit or replace it if it will not reset.
  5. Call a pro Hardwired work, security lockout, or repeated failures.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Alarm type and location
  • Cause that triggered the alarm
  • Steps already tried (silence, batteries, power-cycle)
  • Whether the alarm is battery or hardwired

What type of alarm is sounding?

Identify the alarm: water, freeze, smoke, CO, or security. Each has different causes and silence methods.

Look at the unit. Water alarms are near sump pits or basement floors. Freeze alarms are in cold areas. Smoke and CO detectors are on ceilings or walls. Security alarms have a keypad. Good: you know the type. Bad: unsure—check the label or manual.

You can change your answer later.

Have you addressed the cause?

Water alarm: stop moisture. Freeze alarm: warm the area. The alarm may not silence until the cause is resolved.

Water: find and stop the moisture—see fix-water-alarm-sounds. Freeze: warm the area—see fix-freeze-alarm-sounds. Good: cause addressed. Bad: cause still present—fix it first, then return to silence.

You can change your answer later.

Address the cause first

Water alarm: see fix-water-alarm-sounds. Freeze alarm: see fix-freeze-alarm-sounds. Return to this guide after the cause is resolved to silence the alarm.

Is it safe to stay?

Smoke or CO: evacuate first. Do not stay to silence the alarm if you smell smoke or suspect CO.

If you smell smoke or suspect CO, evacuate immediately. Call 911 from outside. Only return to silence the alarm after firefighters or responders say it is safe. Good: safe to return. Bad: evacuate—do not stay.

You can change your answer later.

Does the silence button work?

Press and hold the hush or silence button for 3–5 seconds. Replace batteries if the unit will not respond.

Press and hold the hush button or silence button for 3–5 seconds. Replace batteries if needed. Good: alarm silences. Bad: alarm continues—power-cycle or replace.

You can change your answer later.

Power-cycle or replace

Power-cycle the alarm (remove batteries or turn off breaker for 30 seconds). If it still will not silence, replace the unit. For hardwired units, turn off power before replacing.

Alarm silenced

The alarm has silenced. Confirm the cause is resolved so it does not resound.

Call a pro

Call a pro if: you need to evacuate (smoke/CO); the alarm is hardwired and you are not comfortable; or the alarm still will not silence after addressing the cause and replacing batteries.

Frequently asked questions

Why would an alarm not silence?
The alarm may be detecting a real condition (water, freeze, smoke, CO) that must be addressed first. Or the silence button is faulty, batteries are dead, or the unit has failed. Identify the alarm type and cause before silencing.
Can I silence a smoke or CO alarm?
Yes, most have a hush or silence button. Press and hold for a few seconds. If it keeps sounding, evacuate—you may have smoke or CO. Never disable a smoke or CO alarm without addressing the cause.
When should I call a pro for an alarm that will not silence?
If you have addressed the cause (e.g. dried the water, warmed the area) and the alarm still will not silence, or if the unit is hardwired and you are not comfortable with electrical work.
