Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, check source and cable, then rule out TV settings and compatibility.

Check source and cable

Goal: Confirm the source supports FreeSync and the cable supports HDMI 2.1.

  • Open AMD Software (Adrenalin) on PC or Xbox Settings > Video modes. Confirm FreeSync or VRR is available.
  • Use an HDMI cable labeled Ultra High Speed or HDMI 2.1. Reseat at both ends.
  • Good: Source supports FreeSync and cable supports HDMI 2.1. Proceed to Check TV settings.
  • Bad: Source not compatible or cable unknown—confirm TV supports FreeSync and try a known-good HDMI 2.1 cable.

Check TV settings

Goal: Confirm the TV VRR or FreeSync settings allow it to activate.

  • Open TV Settings > Picture or Game. Enable FreeSync, VRR, or Variable Refresh Rate.
  • Use the HDMI port labeled for gaming (HDMI 2.1). Enable Game Mode.
  • Good: TV FreeSync enabled. FreeSync activates. Done.
  • Bad: Still no FreeSync—power-cycle to reset HDMI handshake, or call a technician.

When to get help

Call a TV repair technician if:

  • FreeSync works on another display but not the TV with the same cable and settings.
  • The TV never shows FreeSync with a known-compatible AMD GPU or Xbox and cable after all checks.

Verification

  • FreeSync activates when gaming—AMD Software or Xbox shows FreeSync enabled for the TV.
  • The source is an AMD GPU or Xbox and the TV supports FreeSync.
  • The HDMI cable is Ultra High Speed (HDMI 2.1) and firmly connected.
  • The TV FreeSync or VRR setting is enabled and the correct HDMI port is used.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Source and TV support Confirm AMD GPU or Xbox and TV support FreeSync.
  2. HDMI cable Use Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable; reseat.
  3. TV FreeSync settings Enable FreeSync or VRR in TV settings.
  4. Power-cycle Unplug TV and source for 30 seconds; plug back in.
  5. Call a pro FreeSync does not work with known-compatible setup after all checks.

  • Source device (AMD GPU, Xbox)
  • HDMI cable type
  • Steps already tried

Does the source and TV support FreeSync?

FreeSync requires AMD GPU or Xbox and compatible TV.

Check AMD Software or Xbox settings and TV specs. Yes: check cable. No: confirm compatibility—FreeSync needs AMD GPU or Xbox and FreeSync TV.

You can change your answer later.

Confirm compatibility

Confirm AMD GPU or Xbox and TV support FreeSync (check AMD website for compatible TVs). If compatible, check cable and TV settings. If not compatible, FreeSync will not work on this TV.

Is the HDMI cable Ultra High Speed (HDMI 2.1)?

FreeSync Premium over HDMI needs HDMI 2.1.

Check cable label. Use Ultra High Speed or HDMI 2.1. Reseat at both ends. Good cable: check TV settings. Unknown or old: try a known-good HDMI 2.1 cable.

You can change your answer later.

Try different cable and test

Use an Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable. Reseat. Test. If FreeSync appears, done. If not, check TV FreeSync settings and power-cycle.

Is FreeSync or VRR enabled in TV settings?

Some TVs require it to be enabled.

Open TV Settings > Picture or Game. Enable FreeSync, VRR, or Variable Refresh Rate. Use the correct HDMI port (HDMI 2.1). Enabled: power-cycle. Disabled: enable, then test.

You can change your answer later.

Enable TV FreeSync and test

Enable FreeSync or VRR in TV settings. Confirm Game Mode is on. Test. If FreeSync activates, done. If not, power-cycle.

Power-cycle and test

Unplug TV and source for 30 seconds. Plug back in. Turn on source first, then TV. If FreeSync activates, done. If not, call a technician.
