Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, check source and cable, then rule out TV settings and compatibility.

Check source and cable

Goal: Confirm the source is an NVIDIA GPU and the cable supports G-Sync.

  • Open NVIDIA Control Panel on the PC. Under Display > Set up G-Sync, confirm the TV appears.
  • Use an HDMI cable labeled Ultra High Speed or HDMI 2.1. Reseat at both ends.
  • Good: NVIDIA GPU detected and cable supports HDMI 2.1. Proceed to Check TV settings.
  • Bad: TV not listed or cable unknown—confirm TV supports G-Sync and try a known-good HDMI 2.1 cable.

Check TV settings

Goal: Confirm the TV VRR or G-Sync settings allow it to activate.

  • Open TV Settings > Picture or Game. Enable G-Sync, VRR, or Variable Refresh Rate.
  • Use the HDMI port labeled for gaming (HDMI 2.1). Enable Game Mode.
  • Good: TV G-Sync enabled. G-Sync activates. Done.
  • Bad: Still no G-Sync—power-cycle to reset HDMI handshake, or call a technician.

When to get help

Call a TV repair technician if:

  • G-Sync works on another display but not the TV with the same cable and settings.
  • The TV never shows G-Sync with a known-compatible NVIDIA GPU and cable after all checks.

Verification

  • G-Sync activates when gaming—NVIDIA Control Panel shows G-Sync enabled for the TV.
  • The source is an NVIDIA GPU and the TV supports G-Sync.
  • The HDMI cable is Ultra High Speed (HDMI 2.1) and firmly connected.
  • The TV G-Sync or VRR setting is enabled and the correct HDMI port is used.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Source and TV support Confirm NVIDIA GPU and TV support G-Sync.
  2. HDMI cable Use Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable; reseat.
  3. TV G-Sync settings Enable G-Sync or VRR in TV settings.
  4. Power-cycle Unplug TV and PC for 30 seconds; plug back in.
  5. Call a pro G-Sync does not work with known-compatible setup after all checks.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • TV model
  • GPU model (NVIDIA)
  • HDMI cable type
  • Steps already tried

Is the source an NVIDIA GPU and does the TV support G-Sync?

G-Sync requires both.

Check NVIDIA Control Panel and TV specs. Yes: check cable. No: confirm compatibility—G-Sync needs NVIDIA GPU and G-Sync Compatible TV.

You can change your answer later.

Confirm compatibility

Confirm NVIDIA GPU and TV support G-Sync (check NVIDIA website for compatible TVs). If compatible, check cable and TV settings. If not compatible, G-Sync will not work on this TV.

Is the HDMI cable Ultra High Speed (HDMI 2.1)?

G-Sync over HDMI needs HDMI 2.1.

Check cable label. Use Ultra High Speed or HDMI 2.1. Reseat at both ends. Good cable: check TV settings. Unknown or old: try a known-good HDMI 2.1 cable.

You can change your answer later.

Try different cable and test

Use an Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable. Reseat. Test. If G-Sync appears, done. If not, check TV G-Sync settings and power-cycle.

Is G-Sync or VRR enabled in TV settings?

Some TVs require it to be enabled.

Open TV Settings > Picture or Game. Enable G-Sync, VRR, or Variable Refresh Rate. Use the correct HDMI port (HDMI 2.1). Enabled: power-cycle. Disabled: enable, then test.

You can change your answer later.

Enable TV G-Sync and test

Enable G-Sync or VRR in TV settings. Confirm Game Mode is on. Test. If G-Sync activates, done. If not, power-cycle.

Power-cycle and test

Unplug TV and PC for 30 seconds. Plug back in. Turn on PC first, then TV. If G-Sync activates, done. If not, call a technician.
