Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, check signal and power-cycle, then rule out provider issues.

  • Confirm the guide is blank, shows “No data”, or never loads. TV or box shows a channel.
  • Good: You have confirmed the symptom. Proceed to Power-cycle box and TV.
  • Bad: No picture at all—see fix-tv-has-no-signal.

Power-cycle box and TV

Goal: Reset the box so it can download guide data again.

  • Unplug the cable box and TV from power for 60 seconds. Plug the box in first, wait for it to boot fully, then plug in the TV.
  • Wait 5–15 minutes for the guide to download. Do not change channels or turn off the box during this time.
  • Good: Guide populates. Done.
  • Bad: Still blank—proceed to Check signal and input.

Check signal and input

Goal: Rule out weak signal and wrong input.

  • Check the box has a solid signal—look in the box menu or on the front panel.
  • Confirm the TV is on the correct input for the box (HDMI 1, etc.). The box must be on and tuned to a live channel.
  • Good: Signal is good and input is correct. Contact your provider for a guide refresh.
  • Bad: Weak signal—check cables and provider outage status.

When to get help

Contact your cable or satellite provider if:

  • Power-cycle and signal checks do not fix it.
  • Your provider reports an outage or can refresh your box remotely.

For antenna-only TVs, the guide may be limited. See fix-tv-has-channel-will-not-scan.

Verification

  • The program guide loads and shows channel listings.
  • No “No data” or blank guide screen.
  • Guide updates when you change the date or time.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Signal Confirm cable or satellite box has solid signal.
  2. Power-cycle Unplug box and TV for 60 seconds; plug box first.
  3. Input and wait Confirm correct input; wait 5–15 min for guide download.
  4. Provider Check outage status; contact provider for refresh.
  5. When to call a pro If provider cannot fix remotely, schedule a technician—the box may need replacement.

Does the cable or satellite box have a solid signal?

Guide data comes from the provider over the same signal as channels.

Check the box menu or front panel for signal indicator. Good signal: power-cycle box and TV. Weak or no signal: check cables and provider status.

You can change your answer later.

Check cables and provider

Check coaxial or satellite cable connections. Confirm provider has no outage. See fix-tv-has-no-signal for signal troubleshooting.

Power-cycle and wait

Guide can take 5–15 minutes to download after boot.

Unplug box and TV for 60 seconds. Plug box first, wait for full boot, then TV. Wait 5–15 minutes for guide to populate. Works: done. Still blank: contact provider for refresh.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a TV guide not load?
Weak or lost signal from cable or satellite, box stuck or frozen, wrong input, or provider outage. The guide data is sent over the same signal as the channels.
Can I fix a guide that will not load myself?
Yes. Power-cycle the box and TV, confirm signal and input, and check for provider outages. Most issues are signal or box-related.
When should I contact my provider?
If power-cycle and signal checks do not fix it, or your provider reports an outage. The guide is delivered by the provider—they may need to refresh your box or fix a network issue.
