Steps
Goal: Confirm the antenna is connected, the TV is set correctly, and the scan runs properly.
- Confirm the TV will not find channels, the scan fails, or the scan freezes.
- Good: You have confirmed the symptom. Proceed to Check antenna and settings.
- Bad: TV has no picture at all—see fix-tv-has-no-picture or fix-tv-will-not-turn-on.
Check antenna and settings
Goal: Confirm the antenna is connected and the TV is set to Antenna / OTA mode.
- Check the antenna cable is plugged into the Antenna In or RF port—a single round coaxial connector. Not HDMI.
- Open TV Settings. Find Channel, Tuner, or Signal Source. Set to Antenna, Air, or OTA—not Cable.
- Good: Antenna connected and TV set to Antenna. Proceed to Run Full scan.
- Bad: Wrong port or Cable mode—fix those, then scan.
Run Full scan
Goal: Run a channel scan that finds all available channels.
- Open Channel Setup, Channel Scan, or Auto Program. Choose Full, Complete, or Full Scan—not Quick.
- Start the scan and wait—it can take several minutes. Do not turn off the TV.
- Good: Channels are found. Done.
- Bad: No channels or scan fails—proceed to Check antenna position.
Check antenna position
Goal: Improve signal so the scan can find channels.
- Use antennaweb.org or fcc.gov/media/engineering/dtvmaps to find tower direction.
- Move the antenna near a window, higher up, aimed toward towers. Check signal strength in TV Settings if available.
- Try a different coaxial cable or antenna. Power-cycle the TV and rescan.
- Good: More channels found. Done.
- Bad: Still no channels in an area with known OTA coverage—call a technician.
When to get help
Call a TV repair technician if:
- The antenna is connected correctly, the TV is set to Antenna, you have run a Full scan with a known-good antenna and cable, and you are in an area with known OTA coverage.
Verification
- The channel scan completes and finds channels.
- Channels appear in the channel list and can be tuned.
- Signal strength in the TV menu is adequate (if shown).
Escalation ladder
Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.
- Antenna and port Confirm antenna connected to Antenna In; set TV to Antenna/Air.
- Full scan Run Full or Complete channel scan; wait for it to finish.
- Antenna position Move antenna; aim toward towers; check signal strength.
- Cable and power-cycle Try different cable; power-cycle TV; rescan.
- Call a pro Tuner may need repair if all else fails.
What to capture if you need help
Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.
- TV model
- Antenna type (indoor/outdoor, amplified)

Is the antenna connected to the Antenna In port?
The antenna uses a coaxial cable to the RF/Antenna port—not HDMI.
You can change your answer later.
Connect antenna and scan
Is the TV set to Antenna or Air (not Cable)?

Frequently asked questions
- Why would a TV channel scan fail or find no channels?
- Antenna not connected or connected to wrong port, TV set to Cable instead of Antenna, weak signal, antenna in wrong position, or scan type (Quick vs Full) skipped channels. Some areas have very weak OTA signal.
- Can I fix channel scanning myself?
- Yes. Check antenna connection, set TV to Antenna/Air, run a Full scan, and adjust antenna position. Use a signal strength website to confirm towers are in range.
- When should I call a technician?
- If the antenna is connected correctly, TV is set to Antenna, you have run a Full scan, and you are in an area with known OTA coverage but still get no channels. The tuner may need repair.
