Steps

Goal: Find and fix the open or faulted zone so the system can arm.

  • Check the keypad for a zone fault. Note which zone is open.
  • Good: You see the faulted zone. Proceed to Check zones.
  • Bad: No fault shown—check the keypad or power-cycle. See When to get help.

Check zones

Goal: Close all openings and align sensors.

  • Walk the perimeter. Close every door and window. Confirm each zone sensor is aligned (magnet within 1/2 inch of the sensor).
  • Replace batteries in door and window sensors. Low batteries cause faults.
  • Good: All zones closed and aligned. Try arming.
  • Bad: One zone will not clear—bypass it or replace the sensor. See fix-door-sensor-will-not-pair.

Replace sensor batteries

Goal: Replace low batteries that cause zone faults.

  • Use CR2032 or the battery type in your manual. Replace batteries in the faulted sensors.
  • Wait a minute for the sensor to report in. Confirm the fault clears.

When to get help

  • Call your alarm company if you cannot clear the fault or the keypad will not accept your code.
  • See fix-keypad-will-not-accept-code for keypad issues.
  • Do not open the control panel—that can trigger a tamper alarm.

Verification

  • The system arms in stay or away mode.
  • No zone faults are shown on the keypad.
  • All sensors report correctly.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Check keypad Note the faulted zone from the display.
  2. Close openings Walk the perimeter; close doors and windows; align sensors.
  3. Replace batteries Replace batteries in faulted sensors.
  4. Bypass or power-cycle Bypass a zone if needed, or power-cycle the panel.
  5. Call a pro Alarm company for fault, code, or communication issues.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Faulted zone number or name
  • Whether sensors are aligned
  • Steps already tried

Does the keypad show a zone fault?

The keypad displays which zone is open or faulted. Note the zone number.

Look at the keypad. Good: you see a zone number or "Zone fault." Bad: no fault shown but system will not arm—check keypad or power-cycle.

You can change your answer later.

Are all doors and windows closed and sensors aligned?

Walk the perimeter. Close every door and window. Align sensor magnets.

Check each zone. Close doors and windows. Align sensor magnets (within 1/2 inch). Good: all closed and aligned. Bad: one is open or misaligned—fix it.

You can change your answer later.

Fix the open zone

Close the door or window. Align the sensor. If the sensor is broken, replace it. See fix-door-sensor-will-not-pair. Retry arming.

Have you replaced sensor batteries?

Low batteries cause zone faults. Replace batteries in door and window sensors.

Replace batteries in the faulted sensors. Use CR2032 or per manual. Wait a minute for the sensor to report. Good: fault clears. Bad: fault persists—bypass the zone or call a pro.

You can change your answer later.

Replace batteries

Replace batteries in door and window sensors. Confirm the fault clears on the keypad.

Bypass the zone or power-cycle

If you cannot fix the zone, bypass it per your manual. Or power-cycle the panel (turn off breaker for 30 seconds). Retry arming.

Keypad or power issue

If no fault is shown, the keypad may not accept the code—see fix-keypad-will-not-accept-code. Or power-cycle the panel. If the system still will not arm, call your alarm company.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a security system not arm?
Common causes: an open zone (door, window, or motion sensor), a sensor with low batteries, a faulted sensor, or a keypad that will not accept the code. Check the keypad display for the faulted zone.
How do I find which zone is open?
The keypad usually shows a zone number or zone name when a fault exists. Check the panel manual or zone list. Walk the perimeter and check each door and window. Motion sensors may need to be cleared—leave the area and re-enter to test.
When should I call my alarm company?
Call if you cannot clear the fault, the keypad will not accept your code, or the system has a communication or power fault. Monitored systems may need the company to reset or reprogram.
