Steps

Goal: Confirm the antenna is connected, the TV is set correctly, and the antenna is positioned for signal.

Check connection and scan

Goal: Confirm the antenna is connected to Antenna In and the TV is set for OTA.

  • Check the antenna cable is plugged into the Antenna In or RF port—a single round coaxial connector. Not HDMI.
  • Open TV Settings. Find Channel, Tuner, or Signal Source. Set to Antenna, Air, or OTA—not Cable.
  • Run a Full or Complete channel scan. Wait for it to finish.
  • Good: Channels are found. Proceed to Position antenna for best signal.
  • Bad: No channels—proceed to Position antenna and check cable.

Position antenna

Goal: Improve signal by positioning the antenna toward broadcast towers.

  • Use antennaweb.org or fcc.gov/media/engineering/dtvmaps to find tower direction.
  • Move the antenna near a window, higher up, aimed toward towers. Check signal strength in TV Settings if available.
  • Try a different coaxial cable. If you have an amplified antenna, confirm it is powered.
  • Power-cycle the TV and rescan.
  • Good: Channels appear or signal improves. Done.
  • Bad: Still no channels in an area with known OTA coverage—call a technician. For outdoor antenna installation, consider a professional installer.

When to get help

Call a TV repair technician if:

  • The antenna is connected correctly, the TV is set to Antenna, you have run a Full scan, positioned the antenna well, and you are in an area with known OTA coverage.

Consider a professional installer for outdoor antenna installation.

Verification

  • The antenna is connected to the Antenna In port.
  • The TV is set to Antenna and has run a channel scan.
  • Channels are found and the picture is watchable (not pixelated or freezing).

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Connection and settings Confirm antenna on Antenna In; set TV to Antenna; run Full scan.
  2. Antenna position Move antenna near window, higher, toward towers.
  3. Cable and amplifier Try different cable; check amplified antenna power.
  4. Power-cycle Unplug TV for 30 seconds; rescan.
  5. Call a pro Tuner may need repair; consider pro for outdoor antenna install.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • TV model
  • Antenna type (indoor/outdoor, amplified)
  • Distance to nearest towers
  • Signal strength (if TV shows it)
  • Steps already tried

Is the antenna connected to the Antenna In port?

The antenna uses a coaxial cable to the RF port—not HDMI.

Check the antenna cable is plugged into the Antenna In port on the TV. Connected: set TV to Antenna, run Full scan. Not connected: connect to Antenna In, set TV to Antenna, run scan.

You can change your answer later.

Connect antenna and scan

Plug the antenna into the Antenna In port. Set TV to Antenna/Air. Run Full channel scan. See fix-tv-has-channel-will-not-scan if scan fails.

Did the channel scan find channels?

TV must be set to Antenna and run Full scan.

Run Full channel scan. Found channels: position antenna for best signal. No channels: check antenna position, cable, amplifier power; use signal map to confirm tower distance.
Question

Did scan find channels?

You can change your answer later.

Position antenna and check cable

Move antenna near window, higher, toward towers. Try different cable. Check amplified antenna power. Power-cycle and rescan. If still no channels in area with known OTA coverage, call a technician.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a TV antenna not work?
Wrong port (HDMI vs Antenna In), TV set to Cable instead of Antenna, antenna in poor position, weak signal area, faulty cable, or amplified antenna not powered. Run a channel scan after fixing connection and settings.
Can I fix antenna issues myself?
Yes. Check connection to Antenna In, set TV to Antenna, run Full scan, and adjust antenna position. Use a signal map to aim toward towers. Try a different cable or antenna.
When should I call a technician?
If the antenna is connected correctly, TV is set to Antenna, you have run a Full scan, positioned the antenna well, and you are in an area with known OTA coverage. The tuner or antenna may need replacement.
